We do not collect our own population data. Every figure on this dashboard is derived from public datasets published by established international organizations and national statistical offices. Below are the primary sources we use.

Primary Sources

• United Nations Population Division — World Population Prospects. The most widely cited set of historical and projected population figures, including age and sex breakdowns. population.un.org/dataportal
• World Bank Open Data. Country-level population, land area, and demographic indicators, updated annually from national statistical offices. data.worldbank.org
• REST Countries API. Open dataset of country names, codes, areas, and regions used for the country list and flags. restcountries.com

What Each Source Provides

• Base population figures: World Bank / UN World Population Prospects.
• Annual growth rates: derived from year-over-year changes in the sources above.
• Age and gender distribution: UN World Population Prospects, with regional profiles where country detail is unavailable.
• Life expectancy, fertility, median age: World Bank and UN demographic indicators.
• Land area and regions: REST Countries API.
• Historical and projected totals by year: UN World Population Prospects (1950–2100).

Update Cadence

The underlying datasets are updated annually by their publishers. Our live counter interpolates between these updates so the number moves continuously. When a new annual revision is published, our base figures are refreshed and the counter adjusts accordingly.
